The Patek Philippe Ellipse d’Or — or “Golden Ellipse” — was first introduced in 1968 by Head of Patek’s R&D Jean-Daniel Rubeli. Its design was inspired by the golden ratio, a mathematical principle found in ancient art and architecture, resulting in a watch with truly harmonious proportions.

 

Departing from traditional circular or rectangular shapes, the Ellipse’s distinctive case stood out immediately. Released on the eve of the Quartz Crisis, it boldly reaffirmed Patek Philippe’s dedication to traditional mechanical watchmaking, even as much of the industry pivoted to quartz technology.

 

Offered here is a beautifully preserved Ref. 3648J, with the “J” indicating its solid 18k yellow gold construction. Measuring 32 x 27 mm, this model wears with understated elegance.

 

One of the most striking features is the blued gold dial — achieved through a sophisticated vacuum-plating process that gives it a deep, iridescent sheen. This particular example features crisp white printed text, no lume, minimalist stick hands, and is fitted with a stylish Bulang and Sons leather strap. It’s completed by the original 18k yellow gold Patek Philippe Ellipse pin buckle — a classic detail collectors will appreciate.

 

Inside, the hand-wound Caliber 23-300 has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is running beautifully.The watch comes with its original PP presentation box.
