Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Tropical Dial ref. 6239
Rolex has more iconic wristwatches than any other brand when you think about itâfrom the archetype of the dive watch, the Submariner, to the Presidentâs watch, the Day-Date, to the pilotâs watch created for Pan American Airways, the GMT-Master. Add the Explorer, the Datejust⊠yet no model from the Genevan manufacturer captures collectorsâ hearts quite like the Daytona.
Â
The watch we now know as the Daytona didnât actually debut under that name. When Rolex introduced the model in 1963, it carried only the title âCosmograph.â It wasnât until the following year that âDaytonaâ appeared on the dialâwhile Cosmograph remained, a pairing that continues today.
Â
Cosmograph has always been an unusual term. Weâre familiar with chronograph, derived from the Greek chronos (time) and graphein (to write), referring to early timing devices like Nicolas Rieussecâs 1821 instrument that physically marked elapsed time on paper.
Â
Cosmograph, however, wasnât coined by Rolex. The word blends cosmo (world or universe) with the same âwriting/recordingâ root. It also recalls cosmography, the field dedicated to describing the structure of the worldâand later the wider universe.
Â
On offer today is an early and highly desirable example of this legendary model: a reference 6239 featuring a 37 mm stainless-steel case in excellent condition, paired with a crisp polished steel bezel engraved with a 300 âUnits Per Hourâ scale and âpump â style chrono pushers.
Â
And the star of the show:
Â
A silver dial whose originally black sub-dials have aged into a warm chestnut-brown toneâa stunning tropical transformation created purely by time.
Â
This kind of natural ageing gives the watch true individuality; no two tropical dials evolve in the same way.
Â
The dial also features black-printed âRolex Cosmograph Daytonaâ text and T-SWISS-T at the bottom, all set against a beautifully preserved soleil-finished silver backdrop. The watch is fitted with a Rolex folded Oyster bracelet, reference 7835, with 557 end links.
Â
The watch and its hand-wound calibre 722 movement have been fully serviced by our watchmaker.
Â
If youâre looking for a chronograph with history, style, charismaâand an unmistakably unique warm presenceâthis is the one. Get in touch with us!
