Rolex Explorer II 1655 MK1 "Straight Hand"
The Rolex Explorer II 1655, highly regarded among enthusiasts of the brand, was launched in 1971 and came in several variations, each with subtle graphical changes to the dial and bezel. These small details have undoubtedly contributed to its desirability, making it a highly collectible model in all its iterations.
Interestingly, unlike many of Rolexâs sports watches, this genuine tool watchâoriginally designed for spelunkersâwas never considered a status symbol when it was first released, unlike how it is perceived today.
Here we have the very first version, the Mark 1 dial. It also has the "straight second" hand (later models have the typical "bubble" attached, filled with luminous tritium lume) and the rare Mark 1 bezel, where the numbers are "closer to the glass," as opposed to later models where the numerals are set into the middle of the bezel. The case remains in strong condition, as does the bezel. The dial is also excellent, with a soft yellow patina on the lume.
The iconic orange hand remains bright and is the first feature that catches your eye! The bracelet is an Oyster type, reference 78360, with end links marked 501B.
This cool Explorer has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready for new adventures in the future!
The reference 1655 Explorer II is one of the coolest and maybe most underrated matte dial vintage Rolex sports watches in todayâs market, and we absolutely love the exact configuration of this one: bright orange, straight white hand, and a soft yellow toneâawesome!
