Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 1500 Tropical Gilt Dial with Original Chronometer Paper
Weāve always had a soft spot for early Rolex watches with so-called gilt dials. These dials feature a mirror-like finish and gold-colored text, created through a complex and labor-intensive process. The term āgiltā refers to the gold-tone printing on the dial ā not actual gold leaf, but the underlying brass dial plate revealed after the black lacquer is applied and carefully etched away.
Ā
Because of this intricate and costly production method, gilt dials were eventually replaced by simpler pad-printed versions. Yet these early examples often age in the most beautiful ways ā as seen on the one we have here.
Ā
The black surface has developed a rich, almost cosmic pattern of deep brown speckling, like staring into a night sky. This warm tropical hue is further enhanced by the gold gilt text and matching golden markers ā pure vintage charm.
Ā
The 34 mm case remains in lovely condition with a smooth bezel, while the Oyster bracelet is a solid reference 78350 with 557 end links and a clasp stamped SW4.
Ā
This stunning, tropical-dialed Oyster Perpetual Date even comes with its rare punched chronometer paper, confirming its chronometer certification from September 1967.
Ā
Fully serviced by our watch maker this lovely Dresswatch is ready for new upcoming years .
Ā
