Rolex Oyster Perpetual Silver Waffle Dial Ref. 5500 in 14k Yellow Gold

Born as Rolex's “utility” or “purpose-built” wristwatch, the Explorer arrived in 1953, the same year as the Submariner and the Turn-O-Graph. To say it was a major year for Rolex—and for watches more broadly—would be an understatement. It shaped the watch company that Rolex would become, the sports segment as we know it, and the watch-collecting pyramid that Rolex sits atop.

At hand, though, we have a much dressier version than the ones used as a “climbing tool.” This is a drop-dead gorgeous 14k yellow gold version, reference 5500, in 34mm. The dial is to die for, featuring a clean and minty “waffle” texture in a hue between white and silver; we love it! The hour markers are of the “arrowhead” type, with the classic Explorer-style 3/6/9 numerals, which are applied in this case. All of this is paired with a slight “pie-pan” style dial. We think it’s as good as it gets—just look at it!

The watch is paired with an 18k yellow gold riveted Rolex bracelet, reference 7205, with end links marked 57b, all in mint condition—awesome!
