Let’s start with the stunning 18K yellow gold case, which boasts thick, sturdy lugs. This piece comes in the perfect 36mm size but wears slightly larger than your typical classic Datejust.

Why? First, it’s a so-called "Ovettone" (Big Egg in Italian) model, which features a bubble-back case that houses an automatic "Thick" movement. Secondly, the bezel on this one is slimmer and more refined than the fluted bezels seen on later generations.

The convex dial, as opposed to a flat or 'pie-pan' style, gives the watch the illusion of a larger size. Dials from the 1950s, especially those with radium lume, are often found with smudging or discoloration, but this one is incredibly clean. The lume plots have aged beautifully, taking on a warm tone that perfectly complements the leaf hands. The dial features classic 1950s touches, including an applied crown at twelve o’clock and the “Officially Certified Chronometer” text at the lower half.
